ca. 1910 doorways of vienna
Price range: € 19,00 through € 39,00
the lavish doorways are undoubtedly one of the most impressive features of viennese fin-de-siècle apartment buildings—their magnificence is unparalleled in nearly any other european city. beginning in the 1860s and 1870s, a tradition emerged to establish these entry spaces as a second architectural focal point alongside the façade. this was likely done to instill a sense of grandeur in residents and to impress visitors and potential tenants. the resulting design solutions are incredibly diverse, often reflecting recent local trends, and international design ideas. unfortunately, as most doorways are not open to the public, they remain largely under-researched and many masterpieces are yet undiscovered. this poster, which is part of a small series, showcases some of the most interesting entryways built around 1910. in this latest phase of the “gründerzeit”, design becomes clearer, simpler, but also more monumental, often using classical forms. Instead of colorful historicist color schemes, architects now prefer white and gray and often use high-quality materials such as marble.
