not only walls and ceilings, windows, and doors, but also the stair railings of vienna’s fin-de-siècle apartment buildings were given an elaborate design as standard. however, since they are made of solid iron, they are almost always well preserved and have sometimes even been reused in new buildings. in simpler residential buildings, industrially manufactured cast iron elements were used, sometimes found hundreds of times in exactly the same form (e.g., pictures 1, 2, 12, 17, 19, and 20). in contrast, many stairwells feature specially commissioned wrought iron railings that showcase an incredible variety of design ideas. this poster compiles some of the most beautiful ones, cut out in hours of non-ai-based photoshop work, and arranged chronologically.
